Equipment

  • Deep saucepan
  • candy thermometer
  • Parchment Paper

Ingredients

For the Candy Coating

  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar Essential for sweetness and creating that perfect candy coating.
  • ¼ cup Light Corn Syrup Helps prevent crystallization and adds a chewy texture.
  • ¼ cup Water Using cold water results in a smoother candy texture.
  • 1 cup Jolly Rancher Hard Candies Provides vibrant colors and flavors.
  • a few drops Neon Food Coloring Boosts the appeal with bright colors.
  • 1 cup Tonic Water Optional for its fun glow under black light.

For the Apples

  • 4 pieces Granny Smith Apples Wash and dry thoroughly for optimal coating adhesion.
  • 4 pieces Wooden Sticks Ensure they are robust enough to hold the apples.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by washing and thoroughly drying your Granny Smith apples. Remove any wax, and then insert wooden sticks into the cores, ensuring they are sturdy enough to hold the apples.
  • In a deep saucepan, mix granulated sugar, light corn syrup, and cold water. Stir gently to combine all the ingredients, ensuring no sugar crystals remain.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar dissolves completely. This will take about 5-7 minutes, and the mixture should become clear.
  • Allow the mixture to boil without stirring until it reaches the hard crack stage, around 300°F (149°C). Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature carefully.
  • Once you reach the hard crack stage, remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in the crushed Jolly Ranchers and a few drops of neon food coloring until everything is melted and well combined.
  • Carefully dip each apple into the vibrant candy coating. Twist gently to ensure an even coat, then let any excess syrup drip off back into the pan.
  • Place the coated apples on a parchment-lined surface to cool and set. Allow them to rest until the candy hardens, which should take about 30 minutes.

Notes

Optional: Sprinkle crushed nuts or colorful sprinkles on the apples before the candy sets for an extra touch!
